Start on site for revamped Renal Unit at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Work has started on site for the relocation of the Renal Dialysis Department at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. AJ100 architects Stephen George + Partners (SGP) has been working with the Trust to develop feasibility options and deliver the scheme on site which will comprise extensive refurbishment of the existing Nightingale Ward to accommodate the unit.
Explains Babor Qureshi, Principal Architect at SGP: “SGP won the project having been appointed as a supplier on NHS Shared Business Services’ (NHS SBS) Healthcare Planning, Construction Consultancy and Ancillary Services (HPCCAS) framework agreement. The client’s objective was to relocate the existing renal dialysis unit within BRI.
The project involves the development of a new procedure room and the addition of three single-bed facilities with shared bed bays. This will be supported by expanded clinical and ancillary accommodation, alongside essential infrastructure upgrades. The works include the installation of a new Air Handling Unit (AHU) and the construction of an external acid tank enclosure, providing additional capacity.
The scheme involved extensive user group and clinical team engagement to develop a set of options based on the clinical team’s requirements for more side rooms and bed bays.”
SGP developed a feasibility study with a range of options, with costings, based on applicable best practice guidelines, primarily Health Building Note (HBN) 0702 (Main renal unit) as well as other HBNs, Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) and Activity Database (ADB) software.
Concludes Babor: “SGP was able to apply our extensive in-house healthcare expertise to develop a scheme that delivered on the client’s requirements on a live site.
SGP is working on the project in collaboration with contractor Robertson.
