SGP refit delivers new home for state-of-the-art CT scanner

Stephen George + Partners (SGP) is proud to have designed and delivered a bespoke home for a new, state-of-the-art SPECT-CT scanner at York Hospital’s Nuclear Medicine Department.
The Healthcare team at SGP refitted the space to house the scanner and comply with extensive technical requirements, including ventilation, external plant and fire safety system design. SGP’s interior designers also worked closely with clinicians to improve the patient space, creating a welcoming and calming environment.
Comments Steve Batson, Studio Director at SGP: “Completing the complex refit, especially whilst the hospital was still operating, was a challenge and required close communication and co-operation between all parties. Fortunately, we were able to draw on our extensive experience of refurbishing and repurposing spaces, both from previous work at York Hospital and at other NHS Trusts throughout the country.”
Primarily used for oncology imaging and functional brain assessments, the SPECT-CT scanner delivers faster results for the most common scans and ensures patients receive the best possible care. It also allows for more accurate patient scans, as it uses an imaging technique that combines two types of scans to create highly detailed, improved images of the body, enabling earlier and more precise diagnoses.
Concludes Steve: “The refurbishment for this new scanner is the latest part in York Hospital’s continuing upgrade programme and will offer patients access to scans they previously had to travel to Leeds to access.”
