Heckmondwike Bus Station Heckmondwike, UK

A distinctive new transport hub has transformed public transport facilities in the heart of Heckmondwike, improving passenger experience, accessibility and connectivity across West Yorkshire.

The design centres on a bold elliptical building housing a double-height waiting area, complemented by a sweeping canopy, natural York stone cladding and extensive glazing. Six bus stands, improved passenger facilities and accessible amenities provide a welcoming environment, while the architectural form creates a new landmark for the town.

Sustainability and placemaking were integral to the proposals, with a green roof, photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps and sustainable drainage complemented by new landscaping, seating and improved cycle parking. Developed in collaboration with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Kirklees Council and WSP, the project supports the region’s ambition to encourage more sustainable journeys.
