The project formed part of the wider Staveley Town Deal, supported by additional funding from local and regional authorities, and delivered in collaboration with Chesterfield Borough Council, Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society and contractor Stepnell.

The new facility was designed to provide high-quality training, research and commercial spaces, including classrooms, digital labs and workshops, reinforcing Chesterfield’s position within the rail industry.

Key design revisions included reconfiguring the building to avoid a protected embankment and resolving complex site constraints, including construction over realigned railway lines within a live environment

The building’s industrial aesthetic, featuring black vertical cladding, contrasting roof finishes and generous glazing, was carefully developed to respond to its heritage setting while maximising natural light.
