Working with Rush House through LandAid’s Pro Bono Programme
Rush House, Rotherham
Stephen George + Partners (SGP) is pleased to be supporting Rush House, a Rotherham-based charity providing accommodation and support for young people aged 16–25. Through LandAid’s Pro Bono Programme, SGP is working with Rush House to explore how its existing accommodation could be improved to better meet the needs of the young people who live there.
The aim is to help Rush House understand what could be achieved within the existing building, provide ideas for how the improvements could look, and help create a clear basis for taking the project forward. Ultimately, the ambition is to create accommodation that is more comfortable, practical and welcoming for its residents.
Annie Beeton, Architectural Assistant at SGP is drawing up the existing property layout before working with the charity to develop refurbishment proposals to improve the existing bedsits and communal areas.
Annie comments: “Following discussions with the Rush House team on site, we identified an ambition to provide residents with more facilities within their individual rooms, including, where possible, their own bathroom and kitchenette. We’re now reviewing the existing layout and services to understand how these facilities can be incorporated successfully, while ensuring the proposals remain practical and make the best use of the existing building. The project is still at an early stage, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with the Rush House team as the proposals develop.”
Jamie Prescott, Head of Development and Housing at Rush House Ltd said: “On behalf of RUSH, I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to SGP for the considerable time, expertise and commitment they have provided to us on a pro bono basis.
The plans they have developed for us are substantial and represent a significant contribution to the future development of RUSH and the refurbishment, not only to one of our core buildings, but the ‘original Rush House’. Their professional expertise, creativity and understanding of our aims have been invaluable, and the quality of the work undertaken so far has exceeded what we could reasonably have expected.
For a not-for-profit organisation, access to this level of professional expertise is incredibly valuable. We are extremely grateful for the support, enthusiasm and professionalism shown throughout the process. Their contribution is not simply a set of drawings and plans; it is an investment in our organisation and the people we support.”
The project for Rush House forms part of SGP’s volunteering programme, giving our people the opportunity to use their professional skills to make a practical difference to the communities and organisations we support.
We’d also encourage others across the property and construction industry to consider getting involved with LandAid’s Pro Bono Programme. It provides a valuable opportunity for individuals and organisations to use their professional expertise to support charities working with young people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
