Honouring Black History: The Meaning of the Pan-African Colours

Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987 and October was chosen as it coincides with the start of the academic year, creating an opportunity to engage and inspire young people. It is also a month traditionally associated with important gatherings of African leaders.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, heritage, and contributions of Black communities, while also reflecting on the struggles and sacrifices made in the fight for equality. It is an opportunity to challenge racism, amplify voices that have too often been overlooked, and recognise the impact of Black culture and history on shaping the world we live in today.
At SGP, we are acknowledging Black History Month by highlighting the Pan-African colours, black, red, yellow and green, which carry deep cultural and historical meaning:
- Black: Resilience and identity
- Red: The bloodshed and sacrifices of those who fought against slavery, racism, and colonialism
- Yellow: Hope, justice, and equality
- Green: Africa’s natural wealth, fertility, and growth
At SGP, Black History Month serves as an important reminder of our commitment to fostering diversity, equality, and inclusion. It is a chance to recognise and value every individual’s heritage and contributions, while also coming together to honour the past, celebrate the present, and strive for a more inclusive future.
