Stephen George + Partners LLP (SGP) is delighted to announce that Phase 1 of the North East of Leicester Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE), to be known as Thorpebury-in-the-Limes, has broken ground. Foundation works, infrastructure and utilities are all to be delivered over the course of the following months, with the first homes ready by the late summer.

Situated on approximately 360 hectares to the north-east of Leicester, the development will, in total, provide 4,500 new homes in a balanced mix of high-quality housing which can flexibly meet a wide variety of needs in both the short and longer term. SGP has worked with William Davis Ltd to design 144 units out of a total of 574 homes proposed for Phase 1 of the scheme.

Explains Peter Brown, Studio Director at SGP’s Leicester office: “Thorpebury will be a locally distinctive, sustainable and thriving new community that is well integrated with Thurmaston and Leicester. It will have vibrant centres that provide a heart for the community and accessible shopping, community and business facilities, which will assist in realising the regeneration opportunities for Thurmaston and north east Leicester.”

The plan is ‘Landscape led’ with substantial areas of carefully designed landscape woven throughout, giving all residents easy access to amenity green spaces. A vibrant tract of “green infrastructure” running east-west and north-south through the entire development provides a green skeleton for the development, connecting to existing areas of environmental value and extending the Leicester Hamilton Green Wedge.

Concludes Peter: “The development is designed with homes and amenities to attract a full range of residents, creating a varied and active community where all generations can live, whatever their status or age. This diversity is both inclusive and resilient, ensuring a well-loved and versatile community into the future.”

John Reddington, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We’re pleased to have this opportunity to deliver high-quality properties to Leicestershire homebuyers and invest in this growing community in Charnwood. Exciting plans are in place for the development and we’re looking forward to seeing this community progress.”
