Canal-side homes reach completion
SGP is celebrating the completion of an elegant nine-home development on a vacant factory site at Moira, Swadlincote, North West Leicestershire.
We are delighted to be working for our client Wheatcroft Land Ltd, who oversaw the demolition of the former Secura Label factory and erection of 9 three and four bedroom homes on 0.279 hectares beside the Ashby canal.
The dwellings have a simple palette of materials: red brick and grey tiled roofs achieve a contemporary look with traditional render and timber boarding, gable features and Juliet balconies. Details such as chimneys and bullnose brick coping on boundary walls add subtle interest and enliven the character and draw on local references. The designs feature large first floor windows to take in the impressive views across Ashby Canal towards the Moira Furnace and Museum.
As well as the new houses, the development includes associated infrastructure, with a new footpath linking the homes to the canal-side public footpath. Mature trees at the entrance of the site, and new hedges and shrubs will create individual private spaces between the new houses.
Says Peter Brown, Studio Director at SGP: “We revised the outline plans in response to commercial advice, and in recognition of the unique location, creating a well-proportioned development of three- and four-bedroom properties, the size most needed in the current local market, for modern family living.
