London Office Staff Protest in the Campaign to Save Covent Garden

April 1971

London staff successfully campaigned to save the Covent Garden Market from demolition. Associate David Turrent and others set up ECD (Energy Conscious Design) the first truly environmentally focused Architects practice.

A young architect, Jim Monahan, architect in our London office at the time, was outraged at the proposals. His energetic team from the Architectural Associate knocked on every door in the area to publicise what was happening, and drummed up support from famous people. He alerted Austen Williams, vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, who became a courageous leader in the battle.
