And he’s off. On a sunny 1st September morning, Mark Smith started his epic 904-mile run from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise £50,000 for Alex’s Wish, a charity set-up to eradicate Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Having been in serious training since the beginning of the year, Mark hopes to complete the challenge in just one month, in legs of 17 to 40.5 miles per day. Mark will be running with a support team and one of his daughters will be running with him on some of the legs, as well as acting as unofficial photographer!
We hope some local BBC radio stations will be following Mark during his run, and we’re hoping that he’ll have some famous – or infamous – company on the way! Keep an eye on his Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/AcureforDuchenneStepbyStep – for a day-by-day account of Mark’s adventures and his daily live video at 13:30.
Even before taking his first steps, Mark has already received over £5,000 in pledges towards his £50,000 target. More information can be found on his mydonate page https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/marksmith6
