Huddesfield Gateway Bus Station

Huddersfield, UK

Client Kirklees Council

Commission Scope Concept Proposals

SGP supported Kirklees Council to develop a strategic vision for the redevelopment of Huddersfield Bus Station as part of a wider £250m town centre masterplan.

The Huddersfield Blueprint – a ten-year vision to create a thriving, modern-day town centre aims to deliver five key objectives for Huddersfield Town Centre: a vibrant culture, art, leisure and nightlife offering, thriving businesses, a great place to live, improved access and enhanced public spaces. It focuses on regenerating six key areas: Station Gateway, St Peter’s, Kingsgate and King Street, New Street, the Civic Quarter and a new Cultural Heart in the Queensgate and Piazza area.

The Civic Quarter area captures the site of current Civic Centre buildings, the Magistrates’ Court, the Police Station, and the Bus Station. Although no key sites of opportunity are within this area, some buildings are identified sites and spaces, meaning enhancements to the public realm are necessary to improve access for people using services.

The bus station will be improved with the introduction of food, drink and pop up shops as well as additional car parking. The Blueprint also intends to improve the route between the bus station and Civic Quarter and the train station for pedestrians.

Residential opportunities with new housing are being considered to bring new energy to the Civic Quarter as part of a longer terms ambition.
